What it is

An electrocardiogram records the heart's electrical activity to screen for conditions that can cause sudden cardiac events in young athletes — the kind a standard sports physical is not designed to catch. We use a true 12-lead system that is FDA 510(k) cleared for clinical use, not a single-lead consumer wearable. The manufacturer reports correlation greater than 0.95 against standard hospital ECG machines, and the recording itself takes under 30 seconds.

Why it matters

Florida now requires it. Under the Second Chance Act (§1006.20, Florida Statutes), effective July 1, 2026, every student in grades 9–12 must complete an ECG screening before their first FHSAA tryout, practice, or workout. The law is named for Chance Gainer, a Port St. Joe High School athlete lost to sudden cardiac arrest in 2024. We build the screen into every athlete's start, so the requirement is met and a physician has personally read the tracing before the season begins.

What to expect

Painless and quick — electrodes on, recorded in under 30 seconds, and you're done in about five minutes including setup. Dr. Petersen reads every tracing. When anything is equivocal or warrants a specialist eye, the study is sent for a cardiologist over-read and typically comes back within the hour — so nothing ambiguous sits waiting on a referral. Anything that needs further workup goes to cardiology, and the EL1 has a referral field for exactly that. An ECG completed within two years of the school year satisfies Florida's requirement.

What it costs
$199physical + ECG, together, in one visit

Included at no charge for athletes in the program.

Includes
FHSAA sports physical (EL2), performed by a physician
12-lead ECG screening (EL1), FDA-cleared device
Physician interpretation of the tracing
Cardiologist over-read when a tracing warrants one
Completed forms sent to your school
More than one athlete
First athlete$199
Second athlete$149
Third and beyond$99

Families field more than one athlete and the paperwork lands the same week. Sibling pricing applies to athletes in the same household, booked together.

Florida's requirement met in a single visit, with a physician personally reading the tracing. An ECG is a screening test — it does not detect every cardiac condition, and eligibility is determined by your school from the completed forms.
