What it is
An electrocardiogram (EKG) records the heart's electrical activity to screen for conditions that can cause sudden cardiac events in young athletes — the kind a standard sports physical can miss.
Why it matters
Florida now requires it. Under the Second Chance Act (§1006.20, Florida Statutes), effective July 1, 2026, every student in grades 9–12 must complete an ECG screening before their first FHSAA tryout, practice, or workout. The law is named for Chance Gainer, a Port St. Joe High School athlete lost to sudden cardiac arrest in 2024. We build the screen into every athlete's start — so your athlete is cleared, compliant, and protected before day one.
What to expect
Painless and quick — a few electrodes, about five minutes. A physician reads the tracing and flags anything that needs a closer look. An ECG done within two years of the school year satisfies the requirement.
